BACKGROUND
Des@net is a mobile multimedia services provided by Sabah State Library with the cooperation of Unit Kemajuan IT Negeri and Chief Minister's Department. It was introduced under RMK-8, inline with IT Development and Advancement.

The first Des@net service started in January 2002, in the District of Papar. As for now, there are 6 Des@net stations giving services to 42 areas throughout Sabah. District involved in this services is Papar, Kudat, Tawau, Sandakan, Keningau and Lahad Datu. However, Des@net Sipitang will be launched soon. Each station will go and give services to schools and rural communities in each district.

Des@net busses equipped with 10 notebooks, a server to access internet and network, and a printer. The notebooks installed with word processing, spreadsheet and other usefull software needed in the class. During each services, the trainer (appointed by Sabah State Library) will give continuous training on basic computing, internet skill, using email, word processing and spreadsheet. The goal is to ensure that each student gets a hands-on ICT experience on the notebook.

Other than that, Des@net busses also makes available a small collection of books that can be borrowed by the students.

All classes and facilities provided are free of charge.

OBJECTIVE
The primary purpose of Des@net is to promote an awareness among the rural communities in Sabah about the wonders of the Internet and how ICT can help improve life, learning. work and recreation. It is hoped that access to Des@net and its facilities andservices will whet the appetite of the rural.

DES@NET UNIT
This unit established under Bahagian Cawangan, Perpustakaan Negeri Sabah, Lead by Pn. Normah Yahya and officer in charge of this unit is Mr. Mohd. Samsuddin Maidin. It's establishment is to centralized all the des@net operation throughout Sabah.
Unit's Functions:
1. To Monitor all the Des@net services / operations
2. To organise a Trial Run and Road Show, especially in a process of existing new services
3. Making survey to increase the quality of services

SCHEDULE
All Des@net services run everyday (Monday to Friday). Services will stop during exams and School & Public holidays.

COMMITTEE
Des@net is a joint project between Sabah State Library (SSL), Unit Kemajuan IT Negeri (KIT) dan Chief Minister's Department, Sabah. The Des@net Committe, however, includes other organizations such as State Computer Services Department (JPKN) which offers invaluable technical and staffing assistance, and of course, the Education Department without whose cooperation, this project would not have been possible.
